Ile-Ife, the source of the Yoruba race

Ile-Ife, the ancient city of the Yoruba is endowed with cultural and natural endowments. This is reflected in her rich spiritual and natural endowments. This is reflected in her rich spiritual and material culture as could be observed today in her discovered undiscovered and untapped historical, archeological and cultural resources.
The city is wrapped in myths and tales recorded in oral history. But series of researches and archaeological discoveries have thrown more light on the history of this ancient city. Since myths are to convey important truth in a form that will appeal to young and untrained minds any scholar working on the history and culture of Ife must count seriously on the myths and tales as records in our oral history.

LEADERSHIP OF IFE PEOPLE

After some years of settlement it was mutually agreed among the leaders of Mankind of Ile Ife at a meeting held at Idi Agbagba, that they should have their constitution drawn up. In order to effect this, it was considered necessary to consult Oramfe (The Supreme Being) to get his consent. It was decided that one of the Leaders of Mankind who was one of the direct descendants of Oramfe pre-deluge should be sent to contact Oramfe. After very long patience of waiting for the return of the leader sent and then the leaders sent replied and gave reason for his delay that he was not feeling bright hence the delay in his return, the commemoration of which is still being perpetuated at Idio, the shrine of Odua on the vigil of Oodua’s annual festivity called Ipiwo Oodua or Asun-Idana Odun Odua when the following traditional song is echoed, “EJIO O ALORAN O TETE DE O KALA SE FE O, EJIO ALORAN DE ODUN DE” “ODUN MAKO ODUN MAJO O EJIO ALORAN TETE DE ODUN DE”.
